One of the ways in which you can help us meet these obligations is to become more energy efficient. Doing so will not only save you money on your electric bill, it will also help Burley Power meet the growing demand for electricity in our community without investing in expensive new power plants.
There are a number of ways to become a more energy-efficient consumer. Some are easy – turning off the light when you leave an empty room, for example – while others are more complicated – weatherstripping your doors and windows for instance.
Every step helps, though. Here’s a list of tips:
- Air dry dishes instead of using the drying feature on your dishwasher.
- Turn off you computer and monitor when not in use.
- Plug in all home electronics, including TVs, DVDs and cable boxes, into power strips, and turn the power strips off when not in use. Many home electronics, if plugged in, consume power even when they appear to be off.
- Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, which is midway between the low and medium settings on most water heaters.
- Take short showers instead of baths.
- To ensure your heating system is operating efficiently and cut the risk of fire, make sure you haven’t closed or blocked registers, radiators or baseboards.
- Check your ducts to ensure they’re properly sealed, and be sure to insulate ducts and water pipes that go through unheated spaces.
- Consider hanging drapes, even if your windows already have blinds. Drapes add an extra layer of insulation. On sunny days, open the curtains and blinds to let the sun warm your home and close the curtains at night to trap the heat inside.
- Use compact fluorescent light bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs for fixtures used more than two hours a day. CFLs require a fraction of the electricity of the old incandescents, and they last much longer.
- Install low-flow showerheads. Older versions use up to 5 gallons per minute, while newer showerheads range from 1.5 to 2.5 gallons per minute.
- Insulate your water heater if it’s warm to the touch.
- Check your furnace filter once a month during winter when it’s in use. Clean it or replace it as needed to ensure it’s operating at peak efficiency.
- Vacuum furnace air returns, registers, and baseboard heaters. Dust reduces the effectiveness of your system by blocking airflow.
- Install a programmable thermostat and set it to fit your schedule. You can set it to turn down the heat when you’re asleep or at work and to heat back up shortly before you wake up or return home.
- Weatherstrip and caulk leaky windows and doors.
- Clean the lint filter on your dryer after every load.
- Use cold water detergent and wash your clothes in cold water as often as possible.

Do you ever worry that lightning will damage your equipment? It can, even though the city makes a real effort to prevent its. You can help too, by using surge suppressors ahead of the susceptible equipment. And you can add to your surge protection if you wish. The city can install a surge suppressor in your meter base to add protection for your whole house. This comes with insurance from the manufacture should something be damaged by a surge.
